The Riyadh metro is a rapid transit system under construction in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is being built by world’s leading construction companies including Bechtel, FCC, Strukton, Salini Impregilo, Larsen and Toubro and Samsung. It will be the backbone of the city’s public transport system and integrated with an 85-kilometre (53 mi) three-line bus rapid transit (BRT) network.
This project includes 6 unmanned metro lines, overall length is 175 kilometers and groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated on April 4th, 2014, with an opening now projected for 2018. After operation, it will cover main accumulation areas, government facilities and commercial centers in Riyadh, at the same time, it will connect King Khalid International Airport, King Abdullah Financial District and some main universities, which marks construction of public transit network in Saudi Arabia officially entering implementation phrase and it will be the largest metro project in the world at present.
The Metro will be mostly underground and construction of tunnel is inevitable. Self drilling rock bolt(Perno Autoperforante) is a new supporting method in infrastructure construction. It combines drilling, grouting and anchoring together, provides anti-corrosion effect, controls deformation and enhances supporting effect, with high tenacity and big tension. So economic and social benefits are obvious.
