It’s reported that president of Nepal visited China in March this year, both sides discussed the plan of railway network construction: until 2020, extend railway from Shigatse, Tibet to Gyirong, border city of two countries, then connecting with Kathmandu, Nepal.
At present, project of Himalaya railway to connect both sides is carrying forward rapidly. Nepal government declared to start railway network from Rasuwagadhi, Kathmandu to Lumbini in two years.
Compared with convenient transportation in plain topography of border between Nepal and India, the biggest barrier for the connection of China and Nepal is scanty transportation infrastructure. According to statistic, the only international highway in Tibet area is China-Nepal highway, which is 748 kilometers (including 430-kilometer sandy soil road) and only 6-meter wide.
Through many times’ reconstruction, road passing condition has been improved, but mountainous terrain, complex geology, water and soil, climate often influence transportation at border between China and Nepal, which will bring landslide, debris flow and other natural disasters.
Construction of cross-border railway will practically improve cooperative condition between China and Nepal, but firstly reinforcement and support around traffic facilities should be carried out.
